50,000 houses in the next twelve months

This factory-built house, which can be erected in three days, was engineered by automobile technicians and will have nation-wide distribution

BY MARY DAVIS GILLIES

Two bedrooms with plenty of closets, a central bathroom with drawer and shelf storage, a living room and kitchen utility room make this a big little house

IT'S NEW. it's different, it's been tested and it is backed by $12,000,000 of government money. It will sell for approximately $8,000.

The price includes everything but the land on which it is built, and buys a great deal more than you ever dreamed of. The house has five rooms, 1000 square feet and is erected on a concrete slab foundation. Its quality and feeling of permanence come from the steel framing and the porcelain enamel siding used for surfacing both inside and out.

Among its features are a forced hot air, radiant heating unit in the ceiling and and a built-in combination clothes- and dish-washer sink. There are eight generous closets with drawer, shelf and hanging storage. The house has space-saving sliding doors for wardrobe closets, bedrooms and bathroom. There are fluorescent lighting fixtures, big windows and screens.

Thanks to the steel structure, the house will have a low rate of depreciation. It is washable inside and out, will never have to be painted, and is proof against fire, termites, decay and vermin. It has fiber glass insulation, is sound proof, and the colors of the enamel won't fade. If it is dented or chipped the damaged panel can be replaced.

Carl G. Strandlund, president of the company which manufactures the house, looks forward to the time when new and improved house models will be brought out every year, just as automobiles are today. Out-of-date building codes will prevent it's erection in some cities.

There are from 40 to 50 exhibition houses scattered throughout the country in such key cities as Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Detroit and Des Moines.

Turn the page for a view of the interior of the New York house at 52nd Street and the Avenue of the Americas. There were 45,000 visitors during the first two weeks it was exhibited by the American Overseas Aid - United Nations Appeal for Children.

McCall's decorates a factory-built house

Soft wall colors, handsome windows, well-proportioned rooms and built-ins make this an easy house to furnish

The gray walls and brown floor of the living room supply an easy jumping-off place for the color scheme which needed only chartreuse, leaf green and a sharp pink accent to complete it. All these colors appear in the plaid draperies; the upholstery is green and brown. There are six interior wall colors to choose from and four exterior colors. The walls ceiling, baseboards and window sills can be washed with soap and water as easily as a refrigerator

Solid comfort is the keynote of this corner of the living room with its easy chair, ottoman, work table, handy magazine rack, a choice of records, radio or television and a view from the window. The draperies, hung over the wall, leaving the window uncovered, make the room seem larger, give a softer effect

Visitors by the hundreds watched from behind a fence while the house was going up. When it was opened they came and came again to visit, to examine, to ask questions and to place orders

Gladys Swarthout of the opera found the enamel walls warm and livable, the sliding doors pleased Frank Chapman, her husband

Mme. Novotna, who made her American movie debut in "The Search," approved of a radio-television-record player in this modern house

Emily Post said "All the new things in my book "'The Personality of a House' are here. The central heat control panel fascinates me"

It's a factory-built house -

Here are kitchen, dining room and bedrooms

The kitchen comes with cabinet, exhaust fan, a dish- and clothes-washer, an automatic water heater and plenty of cupboard space

The dining room placed between living room and kitchen, is a room in itself. It has shelves behind doors, open shelves and a handy pass counter to the kitchen

The main bedroom with rose-white walls needs only a double bed or twin beds and a chair. Built-ins include a 6-foot mirror, glass shelved dressing table and drawer units. Mr. and Mrs. closets flank the dressing table. There is also a wardrobe closet with sliding doors and high shelves for dead storage

The second bedroom in aqua can be a double or single room. Here it is furnished as a double room with a studio couch and a crib. The play table in the corner is an American Toy Institute design. Muslin curtains have numbers appliquéd, and hanging puppets decorate the wall over the blackboard. There is a large wardrobe closet and cross ventilation

To Guri Lie, daughter of Secretary-General Lie of the U.N., a steel house was appealing. In Norway, as here, wooden houses predominate

Tex and Jinx Falkenburg McCrary of the radio liked the huge closets and easy-on-the-eye colors. Said Jinx, "Hey Tex, let's move in!"

John Whitcomb, illustrator, checked wall spaces to be sure there was a place for pictures and a method of hanging them. On both points the answer was yes

Just any young couple - looking and longing for a home. They liked its freshness and stability. "All we've got to do now is find $8,000," say they
